As the oldest community in Dodge County, Fox Lake has an abundant and exciting history. Much of that history is documented in the Depot Museum, operated by the Fox Lake Historical Society. The museum is open the first and third Sundays of each month during the summer, and during community celebrations. Visitors can enjoy not only the 1800's vintage depot building, but also the exhibits of Native American Indian culture, Civil War memorabilia, and many other historical artifacts.

During the Civil War, Fox Lake was a recruiting center for the Union Army. Over 100 soldiers
enlisted from Fox Lake but only around 10 returned. Civil War graves still exist in the city cemetary.
The Historical Room of the Fox Lake Public Library holds many Civil War artifacts as well as the
local newspapers published during the "Great War".

World renowned jazz musician Bunny Berigan was a native of Fox Lake. His accomplishments, including a posthumous Grammy Award, are celebrated annually on the third Sunday in May. An historical marker at the entrance to the city commemorates Berigan's musical history.
